Oral Injuries

Oral Injuries Treatment at Pinnacle Oral Surgery SpecialistsYou do your best to take care of your mouth. You brush twice a day and floss every single day. You even get regular cleanings and exams. However, sometimes, despite your best efforts to keep your mouth healthy, accidents happen. Oral injuries cover a broad spectrum of a wide variety of injuries that occur to the mouth, including the soft tissues, bones, and teeth. Oral injuries, even if they seem insignificant at the time, need to be addressed by a trained, experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or else you could be facing some significant complications later on. The surgeons at Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists can help.

What Causes an Oral Injury?

There are several different causes of oral injuries, including:
•  Falling and hitting your face on a hard surface.
•  Getting in an automobile accident. Even whiplash can cause an injury by way of temporary jaw dislocation.
•  Sports related injuries.
•  Getting into a physical fight.

Diagnosing Your Oral Injury

If you have experienced an injury to your face, you want an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon on your side. We utilize the latest technological developments in the fields of dentistry and dental surgery to diagnose and then treat your oral injury. Proper diagnosis is key to successful treatment. We perform a thorough oral exam and will conduct a series of tests, which may include angiographs, digital X-rays, and CT scans. Once we have a clear image of what your injury entails, we can create a customized treatment plan.

Soft Tissue Injury

Your mouth is filled with soft tissues – gums, tongue, cheeks, lips. Any injury to these tissues requires immediate attention, for more than just cosmetic reasons. Your soft tissues are filled with blood vessels and nerves. Some areas have salivary glands and ducts. Leaving these severed for too long can result in permanent damage. We have the expertise to repair these delicate parts of your mouth and restore their function.

Bone Injury

Just like any other bone in your body, the bones of your mouth can fracture. However, unlike a broken arm or foot, your jaw, or other bones around your mouth, cannot be put in a cast. However, they still need to be stabilized and set. To do this, we use one of two methods. For some injuries, particularly to the jaw, we may wire your jaw shut. After a set amount of time, we remove the wire to assess your healing. If your jaw is stable, you will move on to further rehabilitation. If it has not, we will replace the wire to allow for more healing time.

For other oral bone injuries, we can use metal plates and screws for stabilization, promoting healing. Using this method has the advantage of allowing you to still use your jaw for eating and speaking. In many cases, the plates and screws may stay in place permanently

Injuries to Your Teeth

Tooth injuries are quite common. We are well-versed in repairing fractured teeth as well as the damage done to the supporting structures. We can even replace a tooth that has been knocked out, if the tooth is intact and has been preserved in a jar of milk (salt water works as well), and you come in right away.

If you have experienced an oral injury, don’t ignore it, even if you think it’s no big deal. Contact Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists today to schedule your appointment.
