CAD/CAM at Pinnacle Oral Surgery SpecialistsWhen your teeth suffer damage, they become compromised. Fortunately, there are some different types of dental restorations available to restore your damaged teeth, and therefore your smile. Typically, most dental restorations require two separate visits. The first visit consists of preparing the tooth and taking impressions. Restorations are created in a separate laboratory. When they are finished, you return to the office for a second visit, where your restoration is checked for fit and cemented in place. At Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists, we can eliminate the waiting period for your restorations with CAD/CAM technology.

What Is CAD/CAM?

CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing. While relatively recent in the dental field (having been gaining popularity in past 20 years), CAD/CAM has been in use for several decades in the manufacturing field to produce tools and car parts.

What Restorations Can Be Made With CAD/CAM?

With the use of CAD/CAM technology, we can make metal-free restorations to meet a variety of needs:
•  Ceramic crowns
•  Veneers
•  Bridges
•  Inlays and onlays
•  Abutments for dental implants

The technology for CAD/CAM has improved drastically over the years. Because of this, the restorations have vastly improved as well. Restorations made by CAD/CAM technology fit better, are more durable and look much more realistic than restorations of the past.

Using CAD/CAM Technology

CAD/CAM technology gives us the ability to design your restorations on a computer. An optical scanner is used to obtain a digital 3-dimensional image of the prepared tooth, or teeth. We then use the CAD software and that 3-dimensional image to draw and design your personalized final restoration. The exact time it takes to create your restoration varies, but it usually takes a few minutes to more than half an hour.

After we design your custom restoration, we begin the milling process with the CAM technology. Your restoration is milled from a single piece of ceramic in a milling chamber. After milling, it can then be further customized with stains and glazes, which will help to give your restoration a much more natural appearance. Finally, it is fired in an oven and polished, ready to be used.

Benefits of CAD/CAM

There are several benefits to the use of CAD/CAM technology in our office:
•  CAD/CAM made restorations are stronger than their older counterparts, and are much less likely to suffer from fractures.
•  The restorations that are created using CAD/CAM technology are much more accurate, as well as much more comfortable.
•  Because we have CAD/CAM technology in our office, your restoration can be made the same day.
•  With the restoration made right in our office, the need for a second visit is eliminated, saving you valuable time in your day. It also means that you do not have to worry about temporary restorations.
•  The risk of complications is lower. Temporary fillings can sometimes fail, or fall out, increasing your risk of infection or other complications. With your permanent restoration placed immediately, this risk is lessened.

With the use of CAD/CAM technology, we can provide you with dental restorations in one visit, rather than two. Contact Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists today to learn more!
