If You Need Major Oral Surgery, You Have Sedation Options

Posted on 6/13/2018 by Front Office
Oral Sedation Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists TX 75032We understand no one wants to have oral surgery. We do everything to minimize the amount of time each procedure takes and only recommend procedures we truly believe you need, but we still know many patients are hesitant to have oral surgery.

One aspect of this hesitation is due to the pain. While all types of surgery can be painful, many people especially fear pain in their mouth.

Fortunately, we have several different types of sedation options available for our patients. Sedation dentistry has come a long way since it was first introduced, and today, you can make use of sedation for everything from cleanings to major oral surgery. Here are some of these options.

Oral Sedation

This type of sedation is generally done for mild procedures. Usually, this involves taking a pill an hour or so before your procedure. You won't feel any pain, but you may or may not be somewhat conscious. You could fall asleep from the medication, but you can be woke up pretty easily.

IV Sedation

For most oral surgeries, though, we recommend IV sedation. This type of sedation involves using an IV to quickly introduce the medication to your body. It takes place quicker than taking an oral sedative, and the amount of medication in your system can be adjusted throughout the procedure. It is possible to still be somewhat awake during this type of sedation, but you likely won't remember much about the procedure.

General Anesthesia

For major oral surgeries, you may need to go under general anesthesia. This means you're fully unconscious and won't remember anything. You also often can't be woken up until the medication wears off or you're given another drug to counteract the anesthesia.

If you have any questions about sedation during your oral surgery, please don't hesitate to call us.
